The first daughter of Walter and Elizabeth (Mowrey) Braden, Mahala grew up in rural Decatur Co., IN, the oldest of the ten children born to her parents.

On Jul. 13, 1843, in Decatur Co., she married Thomas S. Miers, the couple establishing a home on acreage in the Ewington neighborhood of Clay Twp. where Mr. Miers became a prosperous and well known farmer. Unfortunately, about 1879, he was seriously injured in an accident at Emmert's Mill in Greensburg which resulted in permanent paralysis.

Another tragedy struck this couple when their home burned in March 1883. The "Greensburg Saturday Review" of Mar. 17, 1883, reported that the house was burned to the ground and was a $2,000 loss.

Mahala and Tom removed to the city of Greensburg, where they owned a home on East Washington St. The Miers were members of the First Methodist Episcopal Church in that place.

Four daughters and three sons blessed this Miers-Braden union.
