Rose Cardenas Sapien, 83, passed away July 8, 2008, in Raton. She was born in Cimarron Jan. 30, 1925. She was the daughter of Nicholas and Rosita Cardenas.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two children, Irene Sapien and Charles Sapien, and her husband Alexander Sapien. She was also preceded in death by her siblings Ray Cardenas, Lupe Sapien, Frank Cardenas, Dee Martinez, Margie Casias, Barbara Cardenas, Mary Ann Archuleta and Mary Jane Serna.

Rose is survived by her brother Nick Cardenas (Annie) of Cimarron. She is also survived by her children, Consuelo Howe (Chuck) of Angel Fire, Frank Sapien (Corine) of Rio Rancho, Charlene Sapien of Chula Vista, Calif., Natalie Trujillo (Tim) of Raton, Tomas Sapien (Ida Marie) of San Diego, Victor Cordova (Josefina) of Seattle and Barbara Cordova of Encinitas, Calif. Rose is also survived by her grandchildren Miguel Howe, Maria Howe, Charles Sapien, Steven Sapien, Alejandro Sapien, Nicholas Sapien, Cristal Perez, Carina Perez, Marisol Aguilera, Aliya Avalos, Francesca Sapien, Michael Ruiz, Lori Reeger, Tony Cordova, Vanessa Cordova and Alex Cordova. She is survived by many great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Rose is also survived by her special niece, Margarita Saenz (Carlos) of Raton, who took loving care of her for the last year of her life.

Rose met Alexander Sapien (of Pomona, Calif.) in 1940 in Cimarron. Alexander was a coal miner in the Dawson Camps. In 1951, Alex and Rose moved the family to San Diego when Dawson ceased operations. In 1991, when Alex became ill, they moved back to Raton. Alex resided in Miners' Long-Term Care until his death in 1994. Rose obtained her driver's license for the first time when she moved to New Mexico in 1991. She also took the initiative to work at the Raton public school system as an aide. She started studying for her GED at that time, and obtained it. Rose's greatest joy was teaching "her hitos" in the Raton public schools. Rose taught many children how to speak Spanish and English.

Rose's other greatest joy was dancing, and she went to the "bailes" every chance she got! She also enjoyed listening to Spanish music every Sunday on KRTN. Her favorite singer was Doody and his band Grupo Vive. Rose also loved going to Mass on Sunday. Rose will be missed by family and friends.

Recitation of the Most Holy Rosary will be held Monday July 14, at 7 p.m. at St. Patrick's/St. Josephs' Catholic Church recited by Deacon Thomas Alderette. Solemn Mass of the Resurrection will be held Tuesday, July 15, also at St. Patrick's/St. Joseph's Catholic Church with Father Daniel Balizan as the celebrant. Rite of Committal and interment will follow at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery.
