Born in Strumpfelbach, Backnang, Baden-Wurttemberg,the eldest of nine of Jacob and Rosina Barbara Ellinger Koerner, he immigrated to USA in early 1850's and settled near Peoria. He worked very hard and sent for his siblings in successive waves, the elder first.
On 28 Mar 1861 he married Dorothea Margarette Riehm in Peoria. They farmed land in Green Township of Woodford County.
They were parents of 12 children, five of whom survived to adulthood.
