She was born at her home in Draper, Utah on Feb. 25, 1914, the third of four children born to Royal T. and Alice Snow Fitzgerald. As a young girl, Willa worked closely with her father on the farm and also herded sheep. She graduated from Jordan High School (Utah) in the class of 1932, and later married Richard Carlquist on Dec. 2, 1936 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. They were the parents of four children, Brian, Lynn, Doug, and Julie. Brian was killed in Vietnam in 1965. Willa was an active member of the LDS Church and served faithfully in many callings having spent the better part of her life in Primary. She and Richard served in the Columbus, Ohio Mission of the LDS Church from 1983 to 1984. They also served as workers in the Boise Temple. Mom was very proud of her pioneer heritage and was a longtime member of the Daughters of Utah Pioneers having served for many years as its National Registrar. She was a devoted homemaker and loved needlework and sewing, finishing her last quilt shortly before passing. She loved flowers and always had a beautiful garden. She also was an avid home canner. She was truly an elect lady.
She is survived by her sons, Richard Lynn (Peggy) Carlquist of Hazelton, ID, John Douglas (Melanie) Carlquist of Eden, ID; one daughter, Julie Annette Carlquist (Dayle) Woolston of Highland, UT; 14 grandchildren; and 15 great-grandchildren, all of whom were the light of her life. She was preceded in death by her husband of 69 years, Richard Carlquist; their son, Brian F. Carlquist; her siblings, Roy Fitzgerald, Rada Smith, and Louise Holmstead; and her great-grand-daughter, Kourtney Carlquist.
The Funeral will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, July 14, at the Hazelton LDS Church, 531 Middleton Ave., with Bishop Mark L. Okelberry officiating.
A Graveside Service will follow at 4 p.m. at the Draper City Cemetery in Draper, Utah.
Friends may call from 6 until 8 p.m. Sunday, July 13, at the Rasmussen Funeral Home, 1350 E. 16th St., Burley, Idaho, and from 9 until 9:45 a.m. Monday at the Church.
