ELWOOD — Mary Mangas, our beloved mother, 97, of Elwood, passed away July 8, 2008, at her home after a life well-lived.

Born Dec. 14, 1910, in Bellefontaine, Ohio, to George and Martha , she married George Mangas on Nov. 6, 1932, and moved to Elwood.

Mary and George, along with their in-laws, Jack and Teddy Mangas, owned and operated the Elwood Sweet Shop, Mangas Ice Cream Store and Mangas Cafeteria.

Mary was an industrious woman with many interests. She was an avid gardener; enjoyed ballroom dancing, traveling, baking, knitting, sewing puzzles and games; and was devoted to her family. Everyone especially enjoyed her angel food cakes. She had a remarkable sense of style and dressed impeccably. She was ahead of her time in many ways, as she was an environmentalist and into recycling before the terms were coined. She was the perfect complement to our father's sense of humor and found much joy in their marriage. Together they established the Mangas Trust through the Madison County Foundation. She was a member of the Terps Square Dancing Group, Daughters of Penelope, Eastern Star and a former president of the Elwood Garden Club. She was a member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church of Indianapolis.
