Mary died and in late January of 1857, when Lizzie was six, Lewis married Mary Magdalean Slack, an English girl from Norman Cross, Cambridgeshire and twelve years younger than himself. Mary had been married before to David Parish and had a child named Emma, After David died Mary and Emma immigrated to America. After Mary and Lewis were married they moved to North Milan, Indiana, where they had four daughters, Harriet, "Hattie", Mary, Ella Jane "Donie", Katherine, "Kate". Fenella, "Nellie" and Louis.
Lewis had found Indiana unsuitable and Illinois had not proven to be much better, so after Louis was born, Lewis, hoping for better opportunities in Kansas moved the family to Walnut, Kansas in the southeastern part of the state. Here Lewis and Mary stayed and raised their children.
Lewis Vaughan died on May 14, 1891, in Savonburg, Kansas, his was only a few days after his 76th birthday. One month later his wife Mary died. They are buried at Mt. Moriah Cemetery, Neosho County, Kansas.
