This is Abram Hackleman. He was a pioneer of 1846 or 1848. His father, Abner Hackleman came to Oregon in 1845 and took up the first claim taken on the present site of Albany. He then left his land in the care of Hiram Smeed and returned East for his family. Before he could return to Oregon he died. His son, Abram Hackleman, subject of this sketch, came and took up his father's claim. The Hackleman home was situated in East Albany and a grove there still bears the name of Hackleman's grove. The Hackelmans named their part of the town Takena, and for along time there was hot rivalry between the names Albany and Takena. Albany was officially named Takena but later the name was changed.
