John Bunting, Longtime Mandan Resident, Dies
John G. Bunting, 75, longtime Mandan resident, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at his home early Monday afternoon. He had been in poor health for several years. He was the son of the late Dr. F.E. Bunting, prominent pioneer Mandan doctor.
Funeral services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Buehler Funeral Chapel with the Rev. John MacMullen, pastor of the Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in the Mandan Union Cemetery.
The deceased was born at Attica, Mich. on August 14, 1891. His mother was the former Mabel Goundry. He came with his family to Mandan as a small child. He attended Mandan schools, was graduated from Mandan High School and attended an electrical school in Washington, D.C. He served in the U.S. Army during World War I from Dec. 15, 1917 to Nov. 28, 1918. His marriage to Ruth Nead of Mandan took place at the Methodist parsonage on June 2, 1923.
He was employed as a mechanic with the then Connolly Motors and later was self-employed in the garage business in Mandan. From 1942 to 1951 he worked as an electrician in the shipyards of the Long Beach, Calif. area. He had been retired since returning to Mandan from California. He and his wife have been well known for their outstanding rock collections.
He is survived by his widow and by a sister, Mrs. Rhea Adams and her son, William, both of Hamilton, Ohio.
