My Aunt Naomi could cook!!! I would always ask her how she did this or that and she would say, "Oh just a pinch of this or a dash of that". I never did figure out what was a pinch or a dash.... maybe that's why I can't cook to this day. Her fried chicken was the best. I remember all of the fat on the chicken and rolling it in the flour and setting it in the hot black skillet and watching it sizzle for what seemed eternity. The Okra she fixed was like no one else's in California and the meals that she put out on the table were just incredible. She was also the cook for the high school. I used to envy those kids... I knew they had the best cook in the world and wondered why she couldn't come to my home town to cook. Our school stuff was not even close to what I know they had! She had 4 children and many grandchildren. She always treated me like I was her granddaughter instead of her niece. She said she raised my dad and that was the way she thought of me. She led a very simple life but was such a large part of mine! I miss sharing every Christmas and Thanksgiving with her.
