Born Dec. 5, 1933, in Ardmore to Byron Clarence "Jack" and Jessie Mae Bell Cross, he died June 20, 2008, in a Marietta hospital. He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Thelma Joyce Hendrix; and two infant sisters.
He married Artie Mae Watson May 9, 1954, in Gainesville, Texas.
A resident of Carter and Love counties most of his life, Cross had made his home in Marietta since 1964. He worked at the Foodway Grocery Store until 1973, when he opened Jack's Grocery in Marietta. He owned and operated Jack's Grocery until his retirement in 1996. He served 21 years with the Oklahoma Army National Guard, retiring in 1973 with the rank of Sergeant 1st Class. A former member of the Love County Jaycees, he was also the "Secret Santa" for Love County children and, as long as his health permitted, he rebuilt bicycles to be distributed to under-privileged children in Love County at Christmas.
Cross also enjoyed spending time with his family, tinkering in his shop, pickup up pecans, mowing and raising goats. He was Assembly of God.
Survivors include his wife of 54 years, of the home; his mother, Marietta; a son and daughter-in-law, Billy Bob and Brenda Cross, Marietta; a daughter, Linda Banks, Marietta; a son-in-law, Ricky Banks, Overbrook; four grandchildren, Brandon Kyle, Erick Banks, Kyle Jack Banks and Bree Cross; three great-grandchildren, Tristan Hull, Jackson Kyle and Mackenzie Kyle; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Services are under the direction of Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home.
