John F. Kuster was the son of Frederick and Rebecca (Clark) Kuster. He was born in Ellis Co, TX. After John's father's death in about 1864, his mother, Rebecca Kuster, returned to her home in Richland Co, IL, where John and his siblings were raised. John married Sarah Maves 2 Feb 1882, in Vincennes, IN, where John worked as a baggageman for the railroad. In about 1900 John, Sarah, and their three children, moved to Denver. Except for a brief residence in Laramie, WY, John spent the remainder of his life in Denver.

His death notice, in the Rocky Mountain News, 19 Apr 1927, read as follows: Kuster- John F. Kuster, April 16, at 2536 Stout, husband of Sarah E. Kuster, father of Mrs. Bertha Clark, Harry J., and Harley F. Kuster. Services 10:30 a.m. Wednesday from the Highlands Christian Church, W. 34th and Bryant. Interment Fairmount.
