Memoriam for James Ables. Born Mississippi March 4, 1829. Came with his father to Texas in 1835. Eliza his wife of nearly 40 years was born in Kentucky January 7, 1828 and came with her people to Texas in 1850. Her maiden name was Eliza Godfrey. They married in Rusk County May 11, 1851 and moved to Kaufman County in 1855. He served in the Civil War. They had eleven children, three who died in infancy and one who died at age eleven years. Eliza died January 27, 1891. James Ables was the founder of Ables Springs. He served as a Pvt/Sgt Co. C 15th Texas Cav, 2nd Regt Johnson's Brig Co F, Grandberry's Brig and Co H 17th Consolidated Dismounted Cav, CSA. He was captured and imprisoned in the Union Prison Camp near Chicago, Illinois during the Civil War.
