WILLIAM GEX, 80, FORMER FLORENCE POLICE CHIEF
William O. Gex served as Florence police chief for 15 years during the city's
boom years.
Mr. Gex was one of three city police officers when he became chief in 1961. When
he resigned in 1976, the department had 16 officers.
Mr. Gex, 80, of Florence, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital West.
As a young man, Mr. Gex raised Angus cattle in Grant County, but a back injury
forced him to give up farming.
He worked for four years as a probation and parole officer in Central and
Northern Kentucky.
At one time he had as many as 50 parolees under his supervision.
He was a police officer for one year in Florence before being named chief.
During his tenure, the Florence industrial park started, Interstate 75 was built
and Florence grew, said his son, Joseph Gex of Kansas City, Mo.
He enjoyed police work, especially serving and protecting the public.
Mr. Gex was a professional in the way he carried out his job and what he
expected from others, his son said.
"Dad was an extremely dedicated person," his son said. "He was very conscious of
public opinion.
"He was very civic-minded. He liked to help the youth. He was very active in
supporting the high school, grade schools and parochial schools."
Joseph Gex described his father as "a fun-loving guy."
"He loved to tell a funny story. He enjoyed people. He was a very social, very
pleasant, outgoing person."
In his spare time, he enjoyed working with flowers and landscaping his yard.
He was a member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police.
Other survivors include another son, William C. Gex of Newport Beach, Calif.;
two granddaughters and one great-granddaughter.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Grubbs and Linnemann Funeral Home,
Burlington. Visitation will be there from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be
in Warsaw Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 4130
Dixie Highway, Erlanger, 41018.
Thanks!
