ELKHART - John F. Houston Sr., 72, of Elkhart, passed away at 4:15 p.m. Saturday, June 14, 2008, in Elkhart General Hospital surrounded by family. John was born on November 6, 1935, in LaPorte, IN, to the late Guy and Evelyn (Cassidy) Houston. On May 21, 1966, in Prince of Peace Church of the Brethren, South Bend, he married Esther M. Rapp. John is survived by his wife Esther of Elkhart; three children, Georgia (Mike) Smith of Fairdealings, Missouri, John (Crystal) Houston Jr. of Atoka, TN, and Kimberly (Dale) Brown of Elkhart, IN; five grandchildren, Heather, Joshua, Benjamin, Michelle and Shawna; and by one great-grandson, Jeremiah. He is also survived by three sisters, Nora Ford of New Port Richey, FL, Marilyn (Roger) Allison of Leva, WI, and Patricia Kellems of LaPorte, IN. He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, Mary Flemming, three sisters and two brothers. John graduated from LaPorte High School. He proudly served his country during the Korean War in the U.S. Army before becoming honorably discharged in 1957. He worked as an inspector at Coachmen for 13 years before retiring. He also worked as a shuttle driver for PTI. He was a life member of the D.A.V. Chapter 19, Elkhart, and the National Order of Trench Rats. He was also a member of Bristol American Legion Post 143 and Mishawaka Moose Lodge #1262. John was a past D.A.V. State Commander and a past member of Elkhart Moose Lodge #599. He received the Sagamore of the Wabash in 1989 and was a Kentucky Colonel. He enjoyed coaching and umpiring at Osolo little league and participating in the Monday Night Moose Bowling League. Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, June 17, n Chapel Hill Funeral Home, 10776 McKinley Highway, Osceola. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, June 18, in the funeral home, with Rev. Richard Pickard, D.A.V. State Chaplain, officiating. Entombment will follow at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Osceola, with military honors being conducted by the D.A.V. Chapter 19 Burial Squad. Memorial donations may be made to the American Heart Association, 6100 W 96th St., Indianapolis, IN; or to the American Cancer Society, 535 W. Edison St., Mishawaka, IN 46545.
