Pioneer Killed on 61st Birthday

Allen Short, 61 Years, was instantly killed last Thursday, when the Earl McGee combine, on which he was working, tipped over, catching him beneath it.
Mr. Short was born in Walla Walla August 12, 1865, and died August 12, 1926. He came to this county in 1888 and resided here almost continuously since. Besides his widow, Ophelia Short, he is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Cantrill of Tacoma, and one son, Dallas Short, of Anaconda, Mont. Funeral services were held from the Hubbard & Rogg chapel at 3 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The combine on which Mr. Short was tending header was making its way around a hillside when the lower wheel dropped into a rut with the resultant turnover. The header was pulled and thrown clear over the thresher part of the machine. It was almost an hour after the accident before it was possible to get Mr. Short's body out, but he was so badly crushed that it is a certainty that death came instantly. After getting the header cut loose from the rest of the machine and Mr. Short's body out from under the wreck, the machine rolled over five times more down the hill and according to reports is a total wreck. This was the second season for the combine.
Alex Thompson was the only other man on the rig who was hurt and he narrowly escaped severe injury when a lever on the overturning machine caught him at the knee, but only ran through the flesh.
