He was the sixth of eleven children born to Nathaniel and Philura (Holcomb) Carpenter. He married in Massachusetts 12 Feburary 1829 to Anna Graves and were the parents of two sons and two daughters. They resided at Williamstown. Whereas his other family members departed for Rockton in the 1830's and '40's, Thomas did not bring his family to Rockton until sometime between 1850 and 1855. He was a farmer. After the death of the wife of his brother Nathaniel Carpenter, Nathaniel came to live with Thomas.
