He liked to be called J.W. He was born in Wales, the son of James and Sarah Lane. His family came to the United States when J.W. was eight and settled in Ohio. He made a career working on the railroad. The Second World War forstalled his retirement and he spent the war as a locomotive engineer, primarily on the P & L E Railroad. He was the devoted husband of Alice Pursglove Lane and they both raised a family of nine children. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, a member of the Pennsylvanie House of Burgesses, a Justice of the Peace and a decent man.
