She was born on July 27, 1936, in Snowflake, Arizona, to Henry Israel and Clara McNeil Nikolaus. On January 23, 1958, she married her sweetheart, Loy K. Despain, in the Mesa, Arizona Temple. Sylvia enjoyed many interests throughout her life, and was a very accomplished musician, needlecrafter, gardener, chef, teacher, and nurturer. At the time of her death, she was serving as the pre-service trainer for an inner-city humanitarian project for her church.
