William Amerman (Ammerman)'s grave is listed in the St. Joseph County, Indiana Cemetery Inscriptions Vol. 5 published by the South Bend Area Genealogical Society. The cemetery is in very poor condition with few stones standing - surrounded by commercial development. Burials date back to 1834. According to SBAGS records, the cemetery was originally inventoried by the GRP - Graves Registration Project - a WPA project done in 1939 which identified the graves of males 15 years of age and older. At that time they listed the stone as: William Amerman 1802 - 1864.
When the cemetery was inventoried by the SBAGS in 1978 and 1991, they recorded "? Amerman (Stone broken with middle section with rest of inscription missing. Found at back of cemetery in woods leaning against a tree)"
Witter Cemetery is located on the north side of Cleveland Road between Portage Road and Lynnwood Avenue in South Bend, Indiana - German Twp.
In June, 2008, Kay Price - another Findagrave contributor and I found what we believe to be part of William's stone. It was leaning against a tree and we could see what appeared to be 'man' carved on the stone and the same weeping willow design that appears on his wife's stone which is located in the Hamilton Church Cemetery several miles away. The other stones nearby were those recorded as being in the same section as William's.
William Amerman is the only known son of Abraham Amerman and Margaret Ryker. He married Eliza Ann Schenck 13 Sept. 1823 - the daughter of Arthur and Johanna (Sutphin) Schenck. William and his young family are listed in the 1830 Census of Sommerset Co., Bridgewater Twp. New Jersey.
In the 1840 Census they are in Wayne Co., Franklin Twp. Ohio with 5 children. They originally had 6 children, but two daughters died. Catherine Liddle Amerman born about 1825 died a few years later in New Jersey. Hannah Elizabeth Amerman born in 1827, married Thomas Patterson in Ohio in 1844 and died after childbirth in 1845 in Ohio leaving one daughter, Elizabeth A. Patterson. Hannah is buried in Moreland Cemetery, Wayne County, Ohio. Kay and I descend from Hannah and her daughter, Elizabeth.
The remaining four children - Abraham W., Mary Catherine, John Arthur and Ellen Ann moved with their parents to Indiana before 1850 where they are found in the 1850 Census in Fulton Co., Richland Twp. and in the 1860 Census they are in Warren Twp., St. Joseph Co., Indiana.
