Obituary of Lewelln Powell Dean
Dr. Lewellyn P. Dean of Caddo, Okla., died at 1:30 o'clock Thursday morning at the home of his parents, Dr. and Mrs J. W. Dean, of 501 North Main street, at the age of 36. Death was immediately due to a hemorahage, although the young doctor had been ill for thirty days with typhoid fever. The funeral services will be held Friday afternoon at the Dean home with the Woodman of the World in charge. Rev. Grant A. Robbins will deliver the funeral sermon, after which interment will take place in Miriam Cemetery.
Dr. Dean was taken ill thrity days ago when on a visit in Maryville while on his way to Chicago where he had intended taking a post-graduate course in medicine. He was accompanied to Maryville by his wife and ten year old daughter Esther Dean. On the day before he had planned to go to Chicago, Dr. Dean was taken seriously ill with typhoid fever. Ten days afterward he suffered a hemorrhage of the bowels, which came near ending in his death. Twenty days afterwards, or at midnight Wednesday, he suffered a similar hemorrhage which resulted in his death an hour and a half afterwards. Medical men consider the length of time that elapsed between the two hemorrhages very remarkable.
Dr. L.P. Dean was born in Maryville, February 20, 1872. In 1894 he graduated from a Louisville school of medicine and began practice of medicine. Two years before he was married to Miss Margaret Long of Quitman. In 1896 Dr. Dean moved to Shawnee, Okla., and practiced medicine. In 1905 he moved to Caddo, Oklahoma which was his home at the time of his visit to Maryville. Dr. Dean was an implement dealer for a time and he had given up the business to resume the practice of medicine. He is survived by two sisters and two brothers, all of whom are in Maryville to attend the funeral. They are; Mrs. Ed Douglas of Plattsmouth, Neb.; Miss Ethel Dean of Maryville; Dr. Charles Dean of Burlington Junction and Dr. Leslie Dean of Maryville.
Note: It's been reported to me my his granddaughter that prior to his illness he had made a business trip to Mexico. Possibly this is where he contacted the Typhoid Fever.
