Hyrum was born in Burlngton, Iowa. He was carried across the plains by his father, James Hoggard and by Thomas Featherstone. James and Thomas brought their families to America together and migrated to Utah together.

Their children married... Hyrum Hoggard married Mary Ann Featherstone.

Hyrum changed the spelling of his surname to Huggard and that spelling has been retained by his descendants. All of his siblings retained the original Hoggard spelling.
