Sarah M., wife of Jas. H. English was born at Nichols, N.Y., March 18, 1822, and died at Penfield, Pa. Aug. 21, 1900. Her maiden name was Smith, her parents were married in Phil'a, then moved to Nichols, afterwards to Burlington, Bradford Co., Pa. where she was married to Jas. H. English 60 years ago. The children born were Charity (Mrs. Thurston), Lorenzo, Delphine, (Mrs. Levi Bateman), Arcelia, (Mrs. Lyman Sawyer), Mary, (Mrs. O.A. Allen), Jas. H. Jr., Maurice J. of these Mrs. Sawyer and Mrs. Thurston are deceased. Jas. H. English and son Lorenzo, were soldiers in the Civil War and in 1863 the family moved to Penn'a to Toby valley and several years ago moved to Penfield, where the deceased and husband have since lived. Mother English was an invalid for some years and much of a sufferer at last. But soon before her departure in sleep she had a very happy spiritual experience which was an assurance that all was well beyond.
The funeral was in the Penfield Presbyterian church, with which the deceased had fraternized for many years, Rev. D. Caldwell, pastor, assisted by Rev. F.G. Sleep, in charge, W.L. Joyce, director. The interment was in the Penfield cemetery. The husband at the age of 86, survives.
Farewell, dear mother, but our hope,
Glow brightly like the Sun,
While in Grief's darkness here we grope.
Until Time's night is done.
