Arcelia Sawyer, daughter of James H. and Sarah Ann English was born at Burlington, Bradford Co., Pa. June 18, 1851 and died at Penfield, Pa., Sept. 17, 1895. She was the fourth child. Charity, wife of Hiram Thurston, who died in 1887 in Bradford Co., aged 43, Low, born in 1846, now living at Weedville, Delphene, born in 1849, wife of Levi Bateman of Penfield being older, and Mary T. born in 1853 wife of O.A. Allen of Penfield, James H. born in 1857, of Kersey, Pa. Edgar E. born in 1860 and died the same year, Maurice J. born in 1863 now living in McKean Co. Pa., Clarence L. born in 1865 and dying in infancy being younger than Mrs. Sawyer.

In 1863, Mr. English and family moved to Dent's Run, Elk Co. and soon afterward to Spring Run and afterwards to Kersey and to Toby where they lived until in 1891 when they moved to Penfield where the aged parents now live the father 76 years and the mother 73 years of age.

Arcelia was married Aug. 18 1873 to Lyman T. Sawyer who came from Maine. The ceremony was performed at Kersey by Rev. Franklin E. Hewitt. They began housekeeping at the Blanchard homestead in Union township, and afterwards lived at various places, coming to Penfield in 1891.

Five children were born Maud, aged 21, Annie, aged 17, Sadie, aged 15, Edward Nelson, aged 13, Maurice aged 10.

Mrs. Sawyer never had robust health but in spite of this was ever a hard working woman with a pleasant and helpful disposition. She was ever toiling to care for her family and rear them to become useful men and women.

At a protracted meeting at Brockport, Pa., held by Rev. P.D. Runyon in 1888, Mrs. Sawyer was converted and joined the M.E. Church, remaining a consistent member until her death.

Mrs. Sawyer took her bed with illness three weeks before her death. Dr. W.A. Sweier was called and pronounced the illness typhoid fever, Dr. Spackman agreed with this but thought the catarrh was the worst ailment. Drs. Kline and Smith were inclined to think that cancer of the stomach was the disease. She showed improvement during the illness but again grew worse and ceased to live on Tuesday at 11 minutes to five o'clock.

In conversation with her daughter Maud and with her pastor, before her departure, she said that she had no fear of death, having a full hope of anchoring in the Heavenly haven.

The funeral was at the Methodist church in Penfield on Thursday afternoon. Rev. S. Ham preached from the text, "Blessed are the dead that die in the Lord."

The interment was in Penfield Cemetery, where in bright hope of the resurrection the wife and mother is at rest.
