Edith Mary, who preferred to be known as "Mamie," was the second of four children born to William Wallace Monear, who emigrated from the Isle of Man as a young man, and the former Genevieve Jones, a native of Illinois who'd grown up in Wisconsin. Edith and her siblings were all born and raised on a farm in Plainview, Minnesota, which is where she met her first husband, Bernhard Imanuel Ostby.

Mamie and Bernhard had three sons - Clarence, Bernard, and Earl - and a daughter, Muriel. By 1920, Bernhard and Mamie divorced; he stayed on the farm with the boys, while Mamie moved a short distance away with young Muriel. Sometime before 1930, Mamie married Henry G Eyrich, with whom she stayed until her death in 1936.

Mamie passed away at the young age of 53 after a brief illness. According to her death certificate, Mamie died under anesthesia during surgery to remove an abscess. She left behind a loving family, including several grandchildren; her youngest son, Earl, died 5 years before her in California, and is buried near his father Bernhard in nearby Lakewood Cemetery.
