Bernhard (later Americanized to Bernard, though his legal name didn't change) Imanuel Ostby was the second of six sons born to Paul Gjermundsen Ostby and his wife, the former Goro Thornby. Paul and Goro were both immigrants from Norway, having known each other in their hometown in Trysil and marrying when they got to Minnesota; Paul became a Lutheran preacher of local renown, starting and preaching at several churches in rural Minnesota and Iowa during his years of service.

On 18 November 1901, Bernhard married the former Edith Mary "Mamie" Monear. They settled on a farm in Ramsey County and eventually had three sons - Clarence, Bernard, and Earl - and one daughter, Muriel. By 1920, Bernhard and Mamie divorced; the boys stayed on the family farm with him, while Mamie took Muriel and moved a short distance away.

In 1931, Bernhard's youngest son Earl drowned in California; his body was returned to Minnesota to be laid to rest next to his young wife Lucille, who'd passed away in 1927 not long after giving birth to their only daughter.

In 1936, son Bernard moved to Detroit, MI with his wife Alice, son Burt and daughter Estelle. Bernhard joined them and lived under their roof until his death in Detroit in 1941. After his passing, his body was returned to Minnesota, and he was buried in Lakewood Cemetery beside his son Earl and near his daughter-in-law Lucille. On his other side lies his maiden aunt Anne Marie ("Annie Mary") Thornby, sister of his mother Goro.
