Some say that Luke Townley was born in England, but the majority seem to indicate his birth near Wilmington, New Hanover County, NC. Luke married Rebecca Jones about 1796 in NC. She was the daughter of Joseph Jones, and lived to be 100 years old.

Luke was a Private in the War of 1812, NC 12th Company Regiment. In the War of 1812 Service Records he was listed as Luke B. Townley.

Luke and Rebecca's 8 children were born in North Carolina from 1800-1820 - Margaret Lucy, Anna, Mary "Polly", Tabitha, Mahala Julia, Martha "Patsy", Edmund Horatio, Weltha Ann.

After Luke and Rebecca's eldest daughter, Lucy, was married the entire family started migrating. After stops in Georgia and Conecuh County AL, they came to Escambia County FL when the land in West Florida was opened to settlers around 1817. Luke's name is on the tax rolls, as well as Lucy's husband's, Morris Boney. They settled in the area of present day Century, McDavid, and Bogia communities.

Luke died in 1826, and Rebecca married a widower, William Nesbitt Richbourg. She survived him, too.

Luke and Rebecca are buried next to each other in Little Pine Barren Cemetery, sitting on Hwy 29 North in Escambia County, FL. Marker reads:
