Longtime Alaskan Eva Mae Allegar Reed, 70, died June 19, 1997, at Providence Alaska Medical Center with family by her side after a brief illness. No services were planned.
Ms. Reed was born Dec. 9, 1926, in New Market, N.J. She lived and worked in Florida, where she met and married Clarence Reed in 1944. They moved from Ohio to Alaska in 1945 and settled in the Government Hill area. In 1947, they built a home on Park Street in what is now Mountain View on a home site with the only community well for hand pumping water. Ms. Reed worked as a civil servant in the War Department Alaska Air Depot (now Elmendorf Air Force Base) as a tool crib operator -- the only woman in an all-male shop, the family said. She and her husband were avid hunters and sports fishermen and enjoyed gold panning and berry picking. Her favorite fishing was for grayling at Tangle Lakes. The couple enjoyed trips every other spring to visit relatives in the Lower 48. Ms. Reed participated in local bowling leagues, was a lifetime member of Pioneers of Alaska, and a charter member of the Traveling Igloos. After retiring in 1973, she traveled with family to places like Guam, Indonesia, Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Leichtenstein, Austria and Egypt. Her family said: ''Mom was a true Alaskan pioneer who loved the good old days when no one had to lock their doors and a person's word was their bond. Her excellent hunting and fishing skills provided many a winter meal before supermarkets came to town. She was deeply devoted to her only great-granddaughter, Cristin, who enjoyed playing with Grandma, walking with her to get the mail, and who believes that Grandma made the best waffles in the world.''
Ms. Reed is survived by her daughter, Willa Wiley of New Mexico; granddaughters, Cheri Howland and Patti Rayfield of Anchorage; sisters, Emma Kimble of New Jersey, Kay McKeever of California, Evelyn Harmon and Bea Miller, both of New Jersey, Geraldine Haver of North Carolina, Gloria Jones and Nancy Lang, both of New Jersey; great-granddaughter, Cristin Rayfield of Anchorage; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence; parents, George and Florence Allegar Sr.; brothers, Walter, George and Edward Allegar; and sisters, Winnie Walsh and Marie Bowers. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society, 1057 W. Fireweed Lane, Anchorage 99503; or Hospice of Anchorage, 3305 Arctic Blvd., Suite 105, Anchorage 99503. Arrangements were by Kehl's Forest Lawn Mortuary and Crematory.
