ALEXANDRIA — Hellen L. Johnson, 97, of Alexandria, died May 26, 2008, at Alexandria Care Center Alexandria, after an extended illness.

She was born May 13, 1911, in Madison County to Charles W. Ayers and Susan (Ray) Ayers. She has been a resident of Madison County and Alexandria all of her lifetime.

As a young lady, Hellen was raised on a farm. She was a graduate of Alexandria High School class of 1929. She married Austin Johnson in 1930. She was the oldest living member of Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church in Alexandria and was the first woman to hold the office as president of the congregation. She had served as a Sunday School teacher and a Vacation Bible School teacher for several years. She was a member of the Lutheran Ladies Aid, Help Your Neighbor Club and a Bridge Club.

Hellen worked as a librarian at Cunningham School, formerly of Alexandria. Many will remember her as a sales clerk at Fermen's, formerly of Alexandria, for more than 45 years. She was well known for her cooking skills including her first-place winning apple pie, cream pies and her homemade noodles. Hellen dearly loved her family and showed her love by hand crocheting afghans which all of her family were recipients of. Her beautiful smile will be sadly missed but fondly remembered.

Survivors include two daughters, Beverly (Jack) Stevens and Janice Little of Alexandria; grandchildren, Sue Ann (Bill) Steele, Steve (Penny) Stevens, Michael (Candy) Little; great-grandchildren, Andy Steele, Emily Steele, Aaron and Brittany Little, Kylee (Ryan) Allman, Leigh (Clint) Bivens, Lana (Duston) Nichols; great-great-grandchildren, Jakob and Jillian Allman, Sadie and Sydney Bivens, Kace and Karter Nichols; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 40 years, Austin F. Johnson, who died Aug. 15, 1970; granddaughter, Julia A. Little; son-in-law, Jerry J. Little; brothers, Lewis Ayers, Ray Ayers and Floyd Ayers.

Funeral services will take place at 10 a.m. on Friday in Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church, 309 W. Washington St., Alexandria, with Pastor Kal Rissman officiating. Interment will be in Park View Cemetery, Alexandria.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Noffze Funeral Home, 501 N. Harrison St., Alexandria. The family will also receive friends at the church on Friday after 9 a.m. prior to the services.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Our Blessed Savior Lutheran Church or the Activity Fund of the Alexandria Care Center through the funeral home.
