She was born on Sept. 14, 1922 in Price, to Alfred D. and Minnie Myler Morrill. Erma married Percy E. Stewart on Dec. 24, 1939 in Vernal. Their marriage was later solemnized on April 5, 1951 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. Percy died Feb 27, 1999. They are the parents of four children, Carma, Percy Jr., Mark and LaRue.
Erma was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She had a deep love of the gospel and for our Savior Jesus Christ. During her lifetime, she served in many callings, including ward and stake positions as well as a Vernal LDS Temple worker. She and her husband Percy served together as missionaries in the California Fresno and Pennsylvania Harrisburg missions.
She and Percy lived in Jensen for 23 years. In 1963, they moved to Roosevelt, where they, along with Erma's sister, Ardith Atwood purchased Cash Meat Market. It was under Percy and Erma's guidance and direction that the little corner grocery store located on Main Street in Roosevelt grew to Stewart's Market and Ace Hardware, which is now located on West Highway 40 in Roosevelt. It was during her early years in the grocery business where Erma became an expert cake decorator, whose wedding cakes became a favorite choice of newlyweds for generations.
Erma was committed to improving her community. She was involved in the Duchesne County Chamber of Commerce for many years. She was also active in the Roosevelt BPW club, where she served in many positions.
She enjoyed cooking, traveling, shopping, family reunions and going on vacations with her children and grandchildren. Her greatest joy was in spending time with her family and friends.
Her life was focused on her family, teaching each of us by love and example. There was a quiet strength in her being as she lived her life with grace and dignity, even until the very end. Her home was a sanctuary for her children and grandchildren ... a place where they always felt safe and loved.
Erma is survived by children, Carma (Earl) Allred, Percy Jr. (Elynn) Stewart, Mark (Glenda) Stewart, all of Roosevelt; and LaRue (Danny) Green, Elko Nev.; 19 grandchildren and 53 great-grandchildren; sisters, Ardith (Garth) Atwood, Metta Barns, LaRae (Rodney) Perry, Ilene (Gene) Mellin; brother, Max (Hope) Morrill; brothers- and sisters-in-law, Tamara (Hank) Peltier, June Stewart Brown, and George (Lou) Stewart, many nieces and nephews, and her MBF, Ruth Allen.
The family would like to give special thanks to Dr. Greg Staker and Uintah Basin Hospice for their compassionate care of mother during her illness.
Funeral services will be Wednesday, May 21, at 11 a.m. at the Roosevelt East LDS Stake Center, 550 N. 600 East in Roosevelt. Friends may call at the Hullinger Mortuary from 6 to 8 p.m., Tuesday, May 20, and one hour prior to the services at the Stake Center on Wednesday.
