John Carroll was the son of Charles and Magdalene Carroll and the husband of Catharine Burkett. According to later Census records John was born in Virginia rather than Maryland. This researcher believes he was born in Hampshire County, Virginia (now West Virginia) since his family is shown living there in the 1810 Census. He moved with his brother Jacob Carroll from Maryland to Ohio about 1823. He married his wife in Montgomery Co, OH, in 6 December, 1825, according to Lindsay Brien, Miami Vallley Genealogies, p. 8. By 1830 he and his family moved to first Henry County, Indiana, and then later, Howard County, Indiana. In the 1860 Federal Census John and his family are listed as living in Howard County, Indiana. John is a farmer with the value of his real estate listed as $1200 and his personal property $260. Both John and his wife are listed as unable to read or write.
