A farmer and also a son of a Revolutionary soldier. Jacob Carroll was born in Maryland. On 3 September 1818 in Allegany County, Maryland,Jacob married Mary Bartmess. In 1820 Jacob and his young family were living in Allegany County, Maryland. His father, Charles, lived next door. On the other side lived Jacob's brother, David, and his family. In 1821 Jacob and his family moved from Maryland to Ohio, living first in Montgomery County. He met with an accident, which crippled him and much of his hard-earned money was lost. Before 1830 his family moved to Miami County, settling on a farm near the town of Union. In Miami County with the help of his older sons he became financially secure once more.

In his 1846 will Jacob Carroll wrote, "I Jacob Carroll of Union Township, Miami County, Ohio do make and publish this last will and testament. Item 1st I give and devise to my beloved wife in lieu of her dower the farm on which we now reside...containing 80 acres...during her natural life or so long as she remains my widow, providing for the maintenance of my minor children until they are at age to wit, James Carroll, one hundred dollars to Oliver Carroll one hundred dollars to John Carroll one hundred dollars to Sophia Carroll one hundred dollars. Item 2nd I do hereby devise and bequeath to my wife Mary one certain Mare by the name of Sarah and one cow...and my eight day clock...And to my son Joseph Carroll one hundred dollars in money and one mare both of which he has received. And to my daughter Anna Pipinger sic one hundred dollars and to my son Samuel Carroll one hundred dollars and also a yoke of oxen which he has already received. And to my son James Carroll my sorrell horse and my young grey mare and to my son Oliver Carroll my yearling colt and to my son John Carroll my black yoke of oxen and to my Daughter Sophia Carroll my new bureau...Item 4th I do hereby nominate and appoint my son Joseph Carroll and John Hoover executors...I have set my hand and seal this fifteenth day of April in the Year 1846 (Jacob Carroll's mark and seal)." Will proven on 13 August 1846 after Jacob Carroll's death.

Note: Some sources incorrectly give Jacob's death year as 1841 and his calculated birth year as 1785. This resulted from a misreading of Jacob's faded gravestone, mistaking '1846' for '1841.' Since it is known that Jacob was 55 years and 10 months old when he died and his estate records show he died in 1846 his birth year was therefore 1790, not 1785.
