William Barks Sr. married Harriet Carpenter in Marion County on February 25, 1831, however William died on July 6, 1831 from fever. At the time Harriet was just months pregnant with their first child.
The child, named William Barks Jr. for his father was born on January 2, 1832, and he died at the age of 19 years and 8 months. He was buried with his father at Barks Cemetery.
In 1959-60 when the site of the Southland Shopping Center (later Southland Mall and Marion Center Mall) was planned, all of the Barks family graves that could be located were exhumed from the cemetery. William and his son's graves could not be located. Hence William's grave is thought to rest under the Twin Fair Building of the Marion Center Mall.
