My dear mother, Winifred Elizabeth Matthies, died peacefully in her sleep.

Born in Fresno over 85 years ago, she was young at heart and touched countless lives.

She enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1943, and served for three years. During her enlistment, she worked as a Naval Intelligence Specialist and Yeoman Third Class Petty Officer at Terminal Island in Southern California. In her later years, she also became active in the U.S. Naval Reserve and served for another eight years.

Always eager to serve the public, she was an active volunteer with the American Legion, the Red Cross, the March of Dimes, and with the establishment of the Women's Veteran Military Highway on a portion of U.S. 101.

Professionally, she was a longtime employee of the Los Gatos Unified School District and the Bank of America.

In whatever she did, Mom tried to make a difference. God rest her soul and may she find peace and happiness in Heaven with Theophilus, her husband of 52 years.

She will be sorely missed by her friends, relatives, her son Fred and his wife Christine, and their sons, Scott and Eric; and her four great-grandchildren, Brianna, Ian, Abigail and Isabelle.

Visitation will be held at Lisle Funeral Home on Wednesday, May 28, 2008, from 10:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m.

A Graveside Service will be held at San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery on Thursday, May 29, 2008 at 10:00 a.m.
