Ray W. Niles, Sr.
Inventor, Engineer, Dies
Friday at Ann Arbor
Inventor and contributor to the technology of ball and bearing manufacturing, Ray W. Niles, Sr., 76, died early Friday morning, March 20, at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital.
Mr. Niles of 2905 S. Fletcher Rd., was born Aug. 20, 1893, in Croswell, the son of Walter and Martha Cash Niles.
He married Ruth Linderschmidt in 1932 in Saline.
He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Rogers Corners.
Mr. Niles first became associated with Industrial Tectonics, Inc., organization as chief engineer of Metrical Laboratories in May of 1943 and held the position fo chief engineer of the Ball Division from 1951 to 1960.
Since then he has been chief consulting engineer to Industrial tectonics, Inc., with assignments that led to Compton, Calif,; Brooklyn, N.Y. and Mexico City.
Mr. Niles Had numerous patents in his name and made many contributions to the technology of ball and bearing manufacturing.
Survivors include his widow, two sons, Raymond W., Jr., of Chelsea, and Donald of California; three daughters, Mrs. Ray (Zoa) Oliver of Tyler, Tex., Mrs. Ralph (Dorothy) Palmer and Mrs. James (Mary) Frazier, both of California; a sister, Mrs. C.W. Corry of Croswell; 13 grandchildren; seven great grandchildren and seversl nirvrd snf nephews.
Funeral services were held Monday, March 23, at 1:30 p.m. from Bahnmiller Funeral Home, Saline, with the Rev. David Kleis officiating. Burial followed in Oakwood Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Michigan Heart Fund.
