Television Journalist. He was best known to television viewers as the co-host of the widely popular PBS program "The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour" from 1975 to 1995. He attended Dalhousie University and later graduated from Carleton University in Ottawa in 1955. He began working in the news field at ITV in London before switching first to Reuters, and then to NBC News. While with NBC News, he was in Dallas, Texas on November 22, 1963, when President John F. Kennedy was assassinated and gave first-hand reports of the tragic day to the NBC news anchors. In 1967, he joined the BBC and then, from 1971 to 1974, hosted "Washington Week in Review" on PBS. While hosting this show, he earned an Emmy Award for his coverage of the Watergate scandal, along with fellow newsman Jim Lehrer. In 1975, he joined Lehrer to co-host what was first known as "The Robert MacNeil Report" but later became "The MacNeil-Lehrer Newshour." They would co-host the program until 1995, when he retired. He remained as one of the heads of MacNeil-Lehrer Productions until 2011. During his career, he earned various honors and awards for his work.
