Adam was attempting to board a moving ferry at St Louis and missed, falling into the Mississippi River and drowning.

Adam was survived by his widow Theresa and a child. He and Theresa Gerlich married on 14 Jun 1870 in Joliet, Will, Illinois, at St John the Baptist Catholic Church. His parents were listed as Phil Keim & Cath Kerz, and his brother Martin was one of the witnesses. Theresa had just arrived in the US that month from Germany, she was 21 years old. By Oct 1870 they had moved to Ottawa where Adam set up shop as a butcher specializing in sausages.

SAUSAGES.--Mr. [Adam] Keim has fitted up a sausage market in the building at the west end of the Fox river bridge, first door, north side. It is the prettiest establishment of the sort we have ever seen. The floor is covered with oil cloth, the counter neatly painted, racks bright and clean, flies barred out, and, in short, as neat and tidy as a lady's parlor. In the window are bouquets of pretty flowers, and all in all, it is a marvel of neatness and cleanliness, and Mr. Keim intends to keep it so. He is prepared to supply the public with clean and wholesome sausages of every fashion and at decent prices, and invites every one to come and see him. -The Ottawa Free Trader, Sat, Oct 15, 1870, p. 1

His brother Martin Keim ID: 269126267

Adam's LaSalle County probate says he died in Saint Louis, Missouri, but newspapers say his body was recovered at East Saint Louis, Saint Clair, Illinois, directly across the river from downtown Saint Louis. Adam's remains may have been reinterred in East Saint Louis after being identified, but his probate lists funeral expenses being paid.
