Albert Hackbarth was born in February 1887 in Minnesota, the son of Carl and Matilda Makelski Hackbarth who emigrated from Prussia to the United States in 1882. The family moved from Minnesota to Ann Arbor, Michigan around 1896. They built a house soon after at 316 Pauline Street which still stands there.

Albert had several siblings: Emil, Lena, Robert and Josephine born in Prussia, Leo, Bertha, Minnie, Louis Carl,and Emma born in Minnesota and Paul Johannes Hackbarth born in Ann Arbor in 1897.

Two of Albert's siblings preceded him in death: His elder brother Leo who was a New York City Fireman and died on duty in 1911 and his elder sister Josephine in 1916.

His parents and sisters Bertha (Lemm), and Minnie(Coy) who died in Ann Arbor are buried next to him in Forest Hill.

FORMER LOCAL MAN KILLED IN CHICAGO

Funeral services over the remains of the late Albert Hackbarth, formerly a resident of this city [Ann Arbor]will be held at the home of his sister, Mrs. Ernest Bethke, 901 South Fourth avenue, Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock.

Mr. Hackbarth was killed in Chicago on Monday evening by a street car, and the remains arrived in this city last evening. He is survived by a mother, four brothers and five sisters. He was 25 years of age.

Rev. S. A. John will preach the funeral sermon, and the remains will be interred in Forest Hill cemetery.
