Civil War: Company D (New), 2nd California Infantry

Faron (or Faren) Frederick Salter enlisted for a one-year term as a private in Petaluma, California, on December 19, and was mustered into Captain William E. Hull's Company D, 2nd California Infantry, at the Presidio of San Francisco, California, December 27, 1864. Private Salter was mustered out due to the expiration of his term of service at Fort Humboldt, Humboldt County, California, December 19, 1865.

In the 1870 census, Faren Salter and his wife, Elizabeth "Betsy" nee Hotell were living in Petaluma, Sonoma County, with his mother Elizabeth Salter. By 1880, they had moved to San Benito County and had three children, Olive (age 8), Charles (age 6), and Fred (age 4). Another son, William Nathan, was born in 1882. They also had an infant daughter who died in Sonoma County on March 16, 1875, at the age of 1 month and 14 days (Petaluma Weekly Argus, Apr. 2, 1875, p.3). A few months after his death Elizabeth filed for a Civil war widow's pension in Hollister on April 28, 1888, and received certificate No. 974,084. She remarried in 1892 to John Herrington.

DIED.

F. F. Salter, from Wisconsin, aged 44, a farmer, residing twelve miles from Hollister, accidentally killed himself last night. He was taking down a pair of pantaloons from a hook and pulled a loaded gun down, which was in some way discharged ... He leaves a widow and several children practically unprovided for. He was a member of Jesse L. Reno Post, G.A.R., and will be buried under its auspices.
