Born in Columbia, SC, John was the first son of Rev. John O. Reed, Jr. and Mary Duke McLeod Reed. John served in the United States Navy between 1966 and 1970 and attained the rank of E-4. He was awarded numerous commendations including the Vietnam Service Medal, the Campaign Medal, and the National Defense Medal. John attended the University of South Carolina. He was a member of Willow Ridge Church as well as the Catch and Release Bass Club for over twenty years.

Surviving, in addition to his parents of Columbia, are his wife Gwen DeLoach Reed, daughter Kerri Anne Reed, son, John Osborne Reed IV, all of Lexington; sisters Ellen Fuseler and Marilyn Thomson, both of Columbia; brothers James McLeod Reed (John's twin) of Florence, SC, Peter Duke Reed of Arlington, VA, and Phillip David Reed of Columbia.

Services were held at 4pm Sunday, June 6, 2004 in Lexington Baptist Church Chapel on Main Street, officiated by Rev. Bill Howard and Rev. Charlton Bozard. Committal services were held at 11am Monday, June 7, 2004 in Beaufort National Cemetery.
