DEATH OF JOHN MASON
John Mason, whose illness we noted last week, died at Nashville,
Tenn. Friday morning at 2 a.m. His sons Eph and Gib and Dr. J. H.
Maxwell were present at his death; his son Phil reached him as his
remains were being brought to this county on the train.
Deceased was one of the wealthiest and best known citizens of Jasper
county. He owned several hundred acres of fine farming land, well
stocked with horses, cattle, and swine, and was for several years
president of the People's Bank in this city, retiring from the latter
institution in 1886.
He was a man of strong will, and iron constitution, and to all
appearances could almost have bid defiance to death. For the past 10
years he has been following the races and owned a number of the best
running horses in the west, among them being, Pink Cottage, Dougeman, Joe
Starks, Red Buck, Eva K, Joe Shelby, Free Gold, Roddy Pingle, John B.
and several others known in the eastern and southern turf circles where
he went every season; besides some fine breeding animals kept on his farm
near Wheeler.
Mr. Mason was aged 60 years, 6 months, and 21 days at the date of
his death. He had been married three times, and leaves several children,
most of them grown living in North Muddy township.
Sunday his remains were taken in charge by the Masonic lodge of this
city, of which he was a member, and conveyed to the Fairview Cemetery
near Gila, where they were laid to rest with the impressive ceremonies
of that order.
