JOHN BARTON, EARLY VALLEY RESIDENT, DIES
Last of Immediate Members of Noted Pioneer Family, Passes At D Street Residence
Death early yesterday claimed the last of the immediate members of the pioneer Barton family when John H. Barton passed away at 4 a.m. yesterday at his residence, 665 D street. In ailing health for several years, Mr. Barton became seriously ill about a year ago and underwent special treatment at the hospital on two occasions, and also resorted to surgery in hopes of benefiting his health. He was 79 years old. All but two years of his life were spent in San Bernardino. He was born in El Monte in 1855, the son of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin Barton, whose family was among the early settlers of Southern California, coming westward in one of the covered wagon trains.
BECAME A RANCHER
In 1857 the family moved to the Rancho Barton, which included the site of the present asistencia (ranch outpost) on the Redlands road. While still a young boy Mr. Barton inherited a large tract of land on Base Line in San Bernardino, now known as Base Line Acres. Later he began the cultivation of this acreage and made ranching his foremost interest until his retirement about 25 years ago. He lived on his ranch until he moved to 665 D street in 1892, where he erected one of the finest residences in the city at that time.
Like his brother and sister, the late H. M. Barton and Miss Mary E. Barton, he carried on a great deal of philanthropic work and took much interest in the development of San Bernardino. Most of his activities were carried on quietly, since he seldom appeared personally.
