Son of Samuel Brown Wheatley and Rebecca F. Stone. Husband of Susan Dallas Cook. They had eight children: Robert C. Wheatley, Cordie Marshall Miller, James Clyde Wheatley, Riga May Jeffress, John Clifford Wheatley, Icy Ethelene Wheatley, McKinley Wheatley and one unnamed infant who was born and died the same day, July 24, 1881. John and Susan moved to Missouri between June 1880 and June 1881. After living near Malden, MO for a few years, they brought their family in a horse-drawn wagon to Bernie, MO in November 1888, where John served as school teacher, minister and blacksmith. He also built the pews and pulpit for his church and fabricated caskets.
