Frederick Goess was born in Sommerhausen, Germany on February 22, 1878. As a young man, he immigrated to the United States on May 21, 1889. He immediately petitioned the courts to become a United States citizen. He was naturalized on July 25, 1906


He settled on Staten Island and established the Fred Goess Ornamental Iron Works at 562 Richmond Terrace, between Franklin and York Avenues, New Brighton. Fred was a big man, standing 5' 9" and weighing 225 lbs.


Fred married and had two sons. He operated his iron works for over 53 years.


In July 1957, Fred Goess decided to sell his business. He placed a classified in the Staten Island Advance offering his business for sale. He noted it was well equipped with machinery and tools. The building was 120x25 with a "beautiful 5 room apartment". There was oil heat. The price was $15,000.
