Charles R. Bower, 82, 12 Piedmont Street, Methuen, senior deacon of the First Baptist Church, that town, and a prominent member of the local and district units of the Odd Fellows, died Tuesday morning at the Lawrence General hospital, following a long illness. A retired mill overseer, Mr. Bower was employed at the Arlington Cotton mill, later the Acadia mill for over 50 years and at the time of his retirement 15 years ago he had been an overseer for over 30 years. Mr. Bower was born in Lawrence Sept. 24, 1871 and made his home in Methuen for the last 58 years where he was one of the older members of the First Baptist Church. Mr. Bower served as a deacon of the church for over 45 years and he and his wife, the late Mrs. Clara M. (Foss) Bower, who died last November, were married in that church 58 years ago.A prominent member of the Odd Fellows, Mr. Bower was a past grand of Hope Lodge, 34, of Methuen, a member of Kearsage Encampment of Lawrence and was a past director deputy grand master of the Massachusetts grand lodge.
