Lived Here Many Years, Robert Bower. "August 28, 1912. Robert Bower, a well known citizen and business man who has been a resident of Lawrence for fifty-six years, died at 7:05 o'clock Wednesday morning at the family home, 20 Stafford street. He was born in Stockport, Lancashire county, Eng., on Easter Sunday, April 6, 1828, and spent his early days there. He came to America in 1857 and settled in Lawrence, it being only four years after this place had become a city, and he has resided here ever since. For a number of years he was employed in one of the large mills during which service he was elected to represent the city in the State legislature and was re-elected for a second term. While in the legislature he took an active part in the agitation for a 10-hour day in textile establishments, which law was enacted at that time, and it is said that he lost his situation in the mill on account of this activity. Mr. Bower served his country during the Civil war and was a member of Gen. Lawton post, 146, G.A.R. He was also a member of the English Social club. Mr. Bower leaves a wife, six daughters and two sons. The sons are Samuel M. of New York City and Charles R. of Methuen. He is also survived by 26 grand-children and 16 great-grandchildren. "Tis over now and God has claimed his soul, To rest in peace, behind the Heavenly gate, Where many honest hearts have gone before, But none returned from yonder past that door." The funeral will be held Friday afternoon, the time to be announced later.".
