John was born in Elm Grove Community near Westminster, Texas to George M. and Sarah Arrington Brinlee. He died in a local hospital in Sherman, Texas.
At the time of his death he was a retired farmer and rancher.

He attended the Elm Grove School and married Miss Lucy Ella Hix on 30 September 1911.
He was a member of the Shannon Church of Christ and lived most of his life in the Bethany community.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

He was survived by his sons, Jack E. Brinlee of Wharton, Texas, and George M. Brinlee of Forth Worth, Texas; daughters, Mrs. Ollie Maye LaFoy, Mary Evelyn Hawkins and Naomi Louise Shane, all of Sherman, Mrs. Billie Jo Rainwater of Palm Dale, California and Mrs. Betty Juanita Griffith of Port Comfort, Texas; sisters, Miss Jewel Brinlee and Mrs. Era Seaton , both of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Mrs. Flossie Scrivner of Sherman; 24 grandchildren, 34 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Religious services were held at the Dannel Funeral Chapel with Reverend Cass French of the Victory Baptist Church officiating, assisted by Reverend Russell Marley a retired minister of Whitewright, Texas.

Pallbearers, all grandsons, were Larry LaFoy, Duane Brinlee, Mike Brinlee, David Beshears, Ricky Don Brinlee, Robert Brinlee and Jeff Griffith.
