Mary L. Poplin
Mary L. Poplin, 81, passed away Friday, April 15, 1977 at Santiam Memorial Hospital in Stayton, Following a long illness. Services were held Tuesday 2 p.m. at Scio Baptist Church with Rev. John Worley officiating. Burial was in Franklin Butte Cemetery. Huston Funeral Home of Lebanon was in charge of arrangements.
She was born Jan. 13, 1896 in Spearfish, S. D. and came from the Black Hills to Scio, Oregon where she lived the rest of her life. She taught at Gilkey Grade School prior to marrying Jerry Holechek who died in 1933. She then married Paul Poplin on Feb 2, 1935 in Vancouver Wash. He survives.
She continued to operate the Holechek Meat and Ice Plant here until 1946. Mr. and Mrs Poplin later built West Scio Grocery Store which they operated for several years before selling to Earl and LaVerne Hoover at that time. In addition to her husband survivors include a son, Harry Holechek of Culver; a daughter, Bessie Hickman of Washougal, Wash.; a brother Joe Dotson of Independence; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
