OBITUARY

MRS. D. CAMPBELL, DELL

DELL. Sept. 17. -- (Special) -- A gloom was cast over this district Sunday morning, when it was learned that Mrs. Donald Campbell had passed away at 5 p.m. Though she had been in poor health for the last eight years the end was somewhat unexpected.

She leaves to mourn their loss her husband, eight sons, the youngest about six years old; one sister, Mrs. M. J. N. Murray, and one brother, A. D. Nicholson, of Milan.

Mrs. Campbell was gifted over the ordinary in a loving, gentle manner, and though so poorly in health never complained, but had a smile and an encouraging word for everybody. She managed her home and family in such a say that they were all so devoted to her that their only aim was to comfort her in her days of trouble. One son, Dannie Allan is now overseas.

The funeral was held on Tuesday at 10 a.m., her pastor, Rev. M. McLeod, officiating, assisted by Rev. D. McLeod, Gould. Those attending the funeral from a distance were Mrs. J. Morrison, Stearns Morrison, Gould; Mrs. A. McLeod, Mr. and Mrs. Alex Morrison, Galson; Alex McIver, John McIver, J. J. McIver and Miss Katie McIver, Marsboro, relatives of deceased; Mr. Angus Morrison and Mrs. Stearns, Scotstown.

SUPPLEMENTARY BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION

The following information was provided by a great-grandchild of Catherine Nicholson Campbell:

Catherine "Katie" Donelda Nicholson was born May 4, 1868 in Hampden, Compton County, Quebec, Canada, to farmer Donald Nicholson and his wife, Isabella Murray, both of whom were born at the Isle of Lewis in Scotland. Catherine was the fifth of ten children, all of whom were born in Compton County, Quebec.

Katie married farmer, Donald Murdo "Melavi" Campbell in the Scottish settlement of Scotstown, Compton County, Quebec. Together, they had eight healthy, strong boys, all of whom were born on and grew into adulthood on a rocky farm in Dell: Dannie Allan, John Donald, Kenneth, Murdo D., William Forbes, Merrill Angus, Alexander Murdo, and Norman Nicholson. The family also adopted a young orphan girl named Etta Gota, who was adored by the boys. The last survivor of the Campbell children was The Rev. Alexander Campbell, of Seattle, Washington, USA, who died in March 2007.

Katie, a strong Presbyterian woman who wrote and spoke both English and Gaelic, raised strong, honest, hard-working children who strived to make things better for their respective families. She died in Dell, Compton County, Quebec in 1918 at the young age of 50. She was adored by her husband and children.
