Monsignor Hubert Coppenrath was born on October 18, 1930, in Papeete, and was ordained to the priesthood on June 27, 1957, in Paris, France. Vicar of the cathedral of Tahiti, he was named parish priest of Arue in 1959, of the cathedral in 1967, and of the Eastern Islands in 1989. At the same time, he served as director of Catholic education from 1961 to 1971, director of the deacons' school from 1977 till 1997 and vicar general of Papeete from 1993 till 1997.


Appointed coadjutor archbishop of Papeete by Pope John Paul II on November 21, 1997, he received his episcopal consecration on February 21 of the following year from his blood brother, Msgr. Michel-Gaspard Coppenrath, assisted by Archbishop Michel Calvet SM., and Bishop Guy Chevalier SS.CC.


Succeeding to the ordinariate upon the retirement of his brother on June 4, 1999, he retired from office on March 31, 2011, at the age of 80, being succeeded by Msgr. Jean-Pierre Edmond Cottanceau SS.CC.


Decorated with the Légion d'honneur on June 12, 2003, and grand officer of the Ordre de Tahiti Nui on June 24, 2020, the Archbishop passed away at the age of 91, and was laid to rest in his native city's Priests' Cemetery, in the same vault which houses amongst others, the remains of his brother Msgr. Michel-Gaspard.
