List of Civil War Veterans of GAR who died.
"George H. Requa-Enlisted August 1862, as private in 2nd Kansas Battery Light Artillery. Discharged Nov. 21st, 1864, as a Sergeant 2nd Kansas Battery Light Artillery at expiration of term of service, 2 years and four months. Died December 24th, 1915. Buried December 27th, 1915. National cemetery."
George H. (Harmon?) Requa, s. of George Requa and Mary Harmon Austin, was b. in April 1839 at Bates County, MO. He d. Dec. 24, 1915 at Fort Scott, KS and is interred at Fort Scott National Cemetery.
Before 1867 George m. Mary M. Hill who d. before June 1900 prob. at Fort Scott, KS. In the 1870 census they were residing at Osage Twsp. in Allen County, KS where George was a farmer. By the 1880 census they were residing at Marmiton Twsp. in Allen County where George is listed as both a merchant and the local post master. Four child are identified by these latter two censuses; dau. Eleanor, b. circa 1867, Nettie J. b. June 1873, Ralph W. b. Nov. 1874, and Grace b. December 1876. Lucy, another child, has since been identified, who d. at the age of 6 mos. prior to the 1870 census.
In the June 1900 census George, now a widower and a landlord, was residing at Fort Scott with the family of his dau. and son-in-law, Joseph G. and Nettie (Requa) Ausman, the former fire chief of Fort Scott. Unmarried dau. Grace, then 23 years old, was also residing with her father and sister Nettie. George was still residing with the family of son-in-law Joseph Ausman in the April 1910 census.
Except for Nettie (Requa) Ausman and her brother Ralph, the fate of sister Grace is currently unknown. Eleanor, the oldest child of the family, d. at age four in 1871, and is buried next to her infant sister Lucy, latter who does not appear in any of the censuses.
• Nettie m. Joseph G. Ausman circa 1895 at Fort Scott, s. of Jacob and Anna Ausman, b. July 1866 in Missouri. His father is stated to have been from Prussia and his mother from Hanover in Saxony, both places subsequently part of Germany. The Jacob Ausman family relocated from Missouri to Crawford County, KS just before the June 1870 census. Joseph G. Ausman apparently d. at Fort Scott, the January 1920 census of Fort Scott confusingly listing "Nettie Ausman" as the wife of an unlisted person, then calls her a widow. She was the apparent owner of the residence at which her son-in-law and dau. are listed ahead of her as boarders. In April 1930 Nettie was residing at Long Beach, CA as the private housekeeper for an elderly couple.
• Ralph W. Requa relocated to Butte and Siskiyou counties in extreme northern California by the June 1900 census. There he was first a farmer then employed by the California Fish and Wildlife Commission at a fish hatchery. He m. during the 1900s and had at least two children. His wife d. before January 1920 and he before April 1930. His surviving son, George W. Requa, was residing with his maternal grandparents at Chico, CA in the 1930 census.
